Canyon Callings First Book Club in Stowe, Vermont

This is Canyon Calling’s first-ever Book Club Adventure, and we’re kicking it off in the most storybook place imaginable. Before arriving in Vermont, dive into charming reads like Haunt Your Heart Out by Amber Roberts and The Treehouse on Dog River Road by Catherine Drake, both set in the Stowe area. We’ll also explore local favorites such as The Sound of Music Family Scrapbook by Fred Bronson – a wonderful peek into the real lives of the Von Trapps, whose iconic lodge we’ll visit during the trip. For those who want even more Vermont inspiration, we also recommend Midwives by Chris Bohjalian (a gripping novel set in rural VT). We will bring the pages to life visiting places mentioned in the books, discovering hidden gems beyond the stories, and creating unforgettable memories of our own. By the time we head home, we’ll have a new set of tales to share.

Stowe Itinerary

Day 1 – Get to Stowe
Arrive midday at Burlington International Airport and pick up your rental car. From there we’ll make our way toward Stowe with a few classic Vermont stops along the way. We’ll visit the famous Ben & Jerry’s Factory in Waterbury for a fun tour and ice cream, then pop over to Cold Hollow Cider Mill for cider tasting and Vermont treats. In the afternoon we continue on to Stowe Village Inn, check in, and have time to relax and settle into our cozy home base. This evening we’ll enjoy dinner together at Harrison’s Restaurant & Bar in Stowe Village, followed by an optional stroll along Main Street or a sweet stop at Laughing Moon Chocolates. Overnight in Stowe.

Day 2 – Explore the Mountains
After breakfast at one of Stowe’s charming cafés, we’ll head up to Stowe Mountain Resort and ride the Gondola SkyRide for gorgeous views and a short alpine walk on Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak. Late morning, we’ll drive through Smugglers’ Notch to the Sterling Pond trailhead and enjoy a beautiful hike to the pond, where we’ll take in the scenery and have a picnic lunch. The return drive through the Notch offers more stunning vistas and photo opportunities. This afternoon there’s time to rest or wander downtown Stowe before dinner at one of the area’s lively spots like Doc Ponds or The Alchemist. Overnight in Stowe.

Day 3 – Water Day
This morning after breakfast, we’ll set out to explore some of the area’s prettiest water features. First up is an easy walk to Moss Glen Falls, a short trail that delivers big views and great photo moments. From there we continue to the Lake Mansfield Trout Club area for a peaceful forest walk and lakeside scenery. In the afternoon we head to Waterbury Reservoir where we’ll enjoy kayaking or paddleboarding on calm water with mountain views and a relaxed picnic lunch by the shore. On the way back toward Stowe we’ll stop at the Cabot Creamery Store in Waterbury Center for free cheese tastings and fun foodie souvenirs. Late afternoon and early evening are yours for relaxing, a spa visit, or cider tasting in town, followed by dinner at a local favorite such as Idletyme Brewing or Plate. Overnight in Stowe.

Day 4 – Bike the Trail & Explore the Culture
After breakfast, we’ll pick up bikes at a local outfitter and spend the morning riding the Stowe Recreation Path. This beautiful trail follows the river, crosses small bridges, and offers meadows and covered-bridge photo ops—perfect for a relaxed, scenic ride. Later, we’ll head to the Trapp Family Lodge to explore the property, enjoy lunch or a beer flight at the Von Trapp Brewery & Bierhall, and learn a bit about the family’s Austrian heritage. In the afternoon there’s time for optional cultural stops like the Helen Day Art Center or the Vermont Ski & Snowboard Museum. After a refresh back at the inn, we’ll cap the day with a wonderful dinner at Hen of the Wood in nearby Waterbury (reservation recommended), then return to Stowe for the night. Overnight in Stowe.

Day 5 – Burlington Farewell
This morning after breakfast, we’ll check out and drive back toward Burlington. We’ll enjoy a final brunch at a local favorite such as Penny Cluse Café or August First Bakery before exploring the Church Street Marketplace and Burlington Waterfront Park—great places for last-minute shopping, people-watching, and lake views. Then it’s time to return the rental car and say goodbye as we head to the airport for our flights home, hearts full from our time together in Vermont.
