Taste of Tahoe – Active Adventure for Women in Lake Tahoe California & Nevada
Vivid autumn colors, crisp mountain air, smaller crowds. It all marks the beginning of Lake Tahoe’s breathtaking ‘secret’ season. Lake Tahoe is a jewel lying in the Sierra Nevada at 6225 feet elevation, straddling the state line between California and Nevada. It is the largest alpine lake in North America known for the clarity of its water and the panorama of gorgeous mountains surrounding the lake on all sides. We’ll explore Incline Village, hang out in South Tahoe to hike and kayak, white water raft the Truckee River, and play all week in this gorgeous mountain region that averages 300 days of sunshine every year. More than 75% of Lake Tahoe’s watershed is national forest land with hundreds of miles of hiking trails, and dozens of beaches to play on. Unique communities dot the shores of Lake Tahoe, each offering delectable dining options. And of course, we’ll enjoy the 72 mile scenic journey unlike any in the world – a photographer’s dream! Join us on this soft adventure tour and fall in love with Tahoe.
Taste of Tahoe: Activities at a Glance
Taste of Tahoe Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Reno, Nevada by 12noon and be met by your Canyon Calling Trip Leader. We will head out of Reno, making stops at scenic overlooks and acclimate to the elevation as we transfer to the town of Incline Village. We’ll check into our lodge, get settled, and enjoy a welcome dinner at our favorite Brew Pub to get acquainted. Overnight Incline Village.
Day 2
After breakfast, we’ll start our drive of amazing views on this National Scenic Byway as we head south. We’ll make many stops along the way including Chimney Beach with a hike down to the crystal blue waters. Jump into the clear blue waters and swim and enjoy the beach. We’ll have a picnic lunch as we soak in the gorgeous views. We’ll hike back up and continue along this stretch of pristine shoreline hemming in 191 square miles of brisk, opaline water. “Big Blue” weighs in as North America’s largest alpine lake. We’ll stop at Cave Rock for more breathtaking views. You can see the rock structure from almost any point on the lake. It’s still considered sacred to the Washoe Indians and is what they call “The Lady of the Lake” because from the water you can see the profile of a woman’s face in the rock structure, the “Lady”. We continue our journey across the Nevada state line into California. We’ll check into our South Lake Tahoe accommodations and enjoy dinner at a local organic café. Overnight South Lake Tahoe.
On each trip I’ve shared with you I’ve watched as the women you gather together become a community and learn to love, share and become more tolerant and accepting of the differences in the world.
— Lou, Vancouver
Day 3
After breakfast, we’ll take a full day to explore the beautiful area of Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe’s crown jewel. Emerald Bay was designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1969. It’s an oasis of shimmering greens, turquoise and blues against a strikingly beautiful mountain backdrop. Due to Lake Tahoe’s incredible clarity and depth, the colors of the lake are surreal, and Emerald Bay is the perfect place to take in the entirety of the scene. The Eagle Falls trailhead is a starting point for Desolation Wilderness, so we’ll hit it early for a section of this trail and have lunch. The Vikingsholm Trail will lead us downhill to the lake’s shore, opening to views of both Lake Tahoe and Vikingsholm Castle that are simply breathtaking. We’ll visit Vikingsholm Castle; a 38-room mansion that is considered one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the US and is a National landmark. Many photographers consider fall to be the best season due to the unique colors and the changes the aspens go through. Bald eagles soar across the skyline and these trails should knock off all of your bucket list Emerald Bay views. Back to town for dinner and maybe a hot tub. Overnight South Lake Tahoe.
Day 4
After breakfast, we’re off to DL Bliss State Park that includes more than six miles of magnificent Lake Tahoe’s west shore, covering 1,830 acres in California’s Sierra Nevada. We’ll enjoy a hike with brilliant panoramic views, inhale a Jeffrey pine’s vanilla-scented bark, and be moved by the natural beauty that surrounds us. The Washoe were the first people to inhabit the Lake Tahoe basin and the nearby Sierra Nevada range. We’ll learn about the Washoe people that continue to devote time to their language and culture. After lunch, we’ll kayak in this gorgeous area of Lake Tahoe at Meeks Bay. We love Meeks Bay for its spacious white sandy beaches and gorgeous views that surround us as we gently paddle along. It’s off to Tahoe City, a friendly mountain town with a great vibe. We’ll stroll around town and have dinner before heading back to our comfy resort. Overnight South Lake Tahoe.
Day 5
After breakfast, we’ll explore North Lake Tahoe a bit before heading to Truckee California, another wonderful mountain town. Once a raucous logging burg, it’s now a cool artist’s town that attracts celebs of all kinds. Here we’ll enjoy an afternoon of river rafting on the Truckee River, with Class 1 to 3 rapids (which is great for beginners and experienced rafters alike). We’ll be amazed at the miles of beautiful scenery as the Truckee River enters a volcanic canyon of craggy eroded cliffs formed by ancient lava flows from Mt. Pluto. Just before the last mile, the river enters the Floriston Gorge. At the take-out in Floriston, we’ll be served refreshments and shuttled back to our meeting location. It’s back to “civilization” as we drive into Reno, Nevada. We’ll check into our hotel, get cleaned up and enjoy a delicious Farewell Dinner. Overnight Reno.
Day 6
Enjoy the hotel amenities until its time to transfer to the airport for flights home, or choose to extend on your own and play in Reno.
